Android 17 is here (Pixel Drop for Phone and Wear 7 for Watch)

I was just starting to wonder where my June Pixel update is... the past few months haven't been too bad for their 'delay' in getting a good update.  I figured I heard there was going to be a bigger Pixel Drop, and not just a security update.

Then I was hearing rumours of Android 17 going to be the drop, but... there's no new phone...?  There's usually a new version when a new phone comes out, and that won't be until later...

Interesting.

And then today, we get the update

Nice, and with my Watch too.

So the update is technically 2 pieces, the Pixel Drop and then the Android 17.

Android 17:
Android 17 brings a suite of features designed to enhance your productivity, entertainment, security and safety:
  • Multitask with Bubbles: Convert any app into a floating, resizable window with a long-press. On foldables and tablets, a new dedicated "bubble bar" makes split-screen multitasking seamless.
  • Gaming Mode on Foldable Devices: A new 50/50 split layout that places the game view on the top half of the screen and a dynamic gamepad on the bottom, available in the coming months.
  • Security measures: "Mark as lost" now locks missing phones with biometrics to keep thieves out, while temporary precise location permissions and single-contact sharing offer granular privacy.
  • Parental Controls: Parental Controls are expanding to all Android devices, giving parents one place to manage screen time, create downtime schedules, set Google Play content filters, limit or block specific apps, and access Family Link tools like School Time, purchase approvals and location alerts.

Now, you'll be forgiven for not noticing the update on its face as there's no major UI differences like the old days.  (And didn't we used to be able to use 'bubbles' before?)

June Pixel Drop:
  • Screen Reactions: A Pixel-first feature that integrates selfie video directly into screen recordings, allowing you to create "green screen" tutorials and reaction videos on the fly.
  • Gemini Omni & Custom Soundtracks: Edit and blend video, images, and text naturally with Gemini Omni (even create a custom AI avatar), or generate original music with lyrics using Gemini's "Create music" tool.
  • Life-Saving Safety Integrations: Emergency Sharing is now tied directly to Car Crash, Fall, and Loss of Pulse Detection, automatically calling emergency services and alerting your designated emergency contacts simultaneously.

So Gemini is understandable new features; but the Screen Reactions look neat - not sure how much I'll really be using it (nobody wants to see my face tho' eh?)

But here I am using both a new Pixel Drop feature (the screen reactions) and then the new Android 17 Easter egg:

There also is the update that came in for the Watch today.

Wear OS 7:
  • Live Updates & Better Controls: Track real-time events (like sports scores or food delivery) right from your wrist, and easily switch audio outputs between earbuds, phones, and smart eyewear with better control with your connected devices
  • Proactive Gemini Intelligence (Coming later this year): Build custom dashboards with "Create My Widget" using natural language, and let Gemini automate multi-step tasks like booking fitness classes directly from your watch.

This update took a long time, even after it was installed for the watch to be usable after it booted up.

Again, not much that you'll see for difference - but I'm really looking forward to seeing the 'create my widget' feature (interesting that there was no mention of it for the Android 17 update.  Maybe that'll be a future Pixel Drop.
