Review of the TCL K70 NXTPAPER

I'll admit, this phone did not impress me much (duh duh da duh da duh duh).  But, honestly, this device isn't about wowing the socks off of you.  It's $320 outright.  For that price you can't expect a rocket fast device - but it does put it in the price range of a niche I think the summer time might be best suited for.

But let's get into it first, what specs does $320 buy you?

  • 6.75" 15720x720 @ 120Hz
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 4
  • 4GB RAM
  • 128GB storage
  • 50MP + 5MP rear
  • 32MP selfie
  • 5200mAh battery
  • headphone jack!!

As I mentioned in the unboxing, it's nothing earth shattering that would make you blink, but some might like that it has the 1/8" headphone jack.  Maybe..

So, the device doesn't have a jaw dropping - it does have one nifty trick that you'll like; and that is pretty much the fact it has the NXTPAPER, and we saw this last year in the 60 XE model.  This review won't be much different than that, as there's not much different between these.  You might be best served seeing if you could find a 60; however, the 60 used a MediaTek chip, whereas the K70 uses a QC Snapdragon 4.  I'm more of a Qualcomm guy than MT, but that's personal preference.

Pretty much everything you'll see on this phone, we've seen last year.

Having 4GB RAM is even more limiting I find as I swap around apps and try it out.  It's gets there, but it doesn't feel as fluid.

The camera is the same as last year in terms of ability, and it's not impressive.  It's not bad, but to get the best out of it requires some setting up - ensuring the right lighting etc...

In terms of features, the only thing that stands out to me is the feature/app shelf that is able to slide out from the side giving you easier access to some multi-tasking.

The big feature, what anyone is going to be looking for this phone for, is the NXTPAPER feature -- the ability to turn the display to look like some eInk.  Not only is it easier on the eye, and mimics an eReader for reading books, but it's going to maximize your battery.

There are 3 modes to choose from in NXTPAPER:

  • Colour Paper
  • Ink Paper
  • Max Ink

So basically go from a regular display to a semi colour eInk look, then to no colour, to a simplified UI in Max mode.  In Max mode you get a TON of battery time then.

Then this is where this model kinda hits on to me what you'd want this for.  A device that I can get my email on - but it's not the main thing for me to watch a lot of video or scroll social media, but rather read some books.

You'd want this as your travel companion.  Going somewhere warm with a beach or just want to read but be able to get your email just-in-case?  And at $320 it's an option you can load up your SIM, leave your daily device at home so you're not at a big loss if something happens.

It's a niche use case, but it's getting to summer travel season and I can definitely see the upshot of not bringing your main device with you through travels and have something like this loaded up with a dozen books - in Max Ink mode it could last you more than the week for battery - so you may not even need to bring a charger!

Where would you use the phone?
