So, it took a few days after the announcement, but I finally got the update for the March Pixel Drop. Yay.
One of the new features is a desktop mode. Cool.
Now, my Pixel Tablet got the update first and it introduced a new 'floating' app version that looks a lot like a desktop environment, but isn't.
See, full screen apps now have a bar at the top you can touch to adjust between fullscreen, side by side, or floaty.
Seems pretty cool, except that I remembered that the Pixel Tablet doesn't have HDMI out, so I can't use my adapter and connect it to one of my monitors to really take advantage of more screen real estate.
It was nice to see that if you bring up 'multi' the whole desktop becomes an option to switch to vs. any of the individual apps.
When my phone (Pixel 10 Pro) got the update, I thought to give it a try. Didn't see that option on the regular apps, but when I plugged in an HDMI adapter, I got a pop up to pick to choose mirror or desktop.
I chose Desktop.
Now I'm met with a desktop environment - it looks very much like an early Chromebook. Simple app tray at the bottom, some navigation buttons in the bottom right and then a system tray at the top.
There didn't seem to be an easy way to try to screenshot that I could see, but I'm going with 'early days' in this.
Getting closer and closer to my dream of no more laptops... just one device I plug in to various displays as needed.
Gonna try and experiment and see if it could work with a dual HDMI adapter and work with two monitors. That'd be fun.
