Hey everybody, it's been a while that I've had the OnePlus 15R ($1000CDN) in my hands, and I've been truly trying to give it a go - really make sure it' compared to the namesake OnePlus 15 ($1300).
A little while ago I had given you a breakdown of those 2 phones by the numbers, so you know that there's some difference.
An R model, is like the 'a' model for Pixels; you trade off some of the top end specs and then shave off some of the cost. Is the cost savings making up for the spec sacrifice?
Well, let's see.
First up... that case. The OnePlus 15R Hole Pattern Magnetic Case, in that a) it still comes with magnets for your to mount it places (but it doesn't wirelessly charge) and b) it comes with a number of little red 'dots' for you to make your own 'pattern' on it.
Now, using it - as I mentioned in the video - it was nearly identical in every way to the OnePlus 15... in terms of performance (at least for what I was using it for and I was using it in a very standard way: games, emails, social media, photos etc...). So I had a tough time wanting to showcase all the features of the OnePlus 15R as I'd done all of that with the OnePlus 15.
All features are identical.
Display is identical.
Battery is identical (okay, not perfectly identical, it is 1.4% increased). Sure, the OnePlus 15R does charge slightly slower with the wire; but the big piece here is that the 15R doesn't have wireless charging at all. To me, that's the deal breaker. I gotta have wireless.
Performance ... I'm sure there is a difference if I reeeeeaaaalllly squeezed it and squinted, I could maybe tell. But then again I'm not using high intensity apps here, so for all intents and purposes, they behaved the same.
The photography is nearly identical, the selfie being a bit less, but I don't know if people will really see that difference. The major loss here for photography is that zoom lens. It's not a 'must' for me, but it is annoying when you don't have it.
So, should you buy this? If you don't want the telephoto lens and Qi, yeah, absolutely. $300 saving as you'll never notice anything else different vs. the OnePlus 15. If you do want the top end specs (not that I think you'll notice) and are okay without Qi and zoom, you'll be very satisfied with the R. If (like me) you need the wireless... spend the $300.
