My son's TCL finally... well, not died, but he decided it was time to replace it. Having a plethora of devices around me, he picked up the Pixel 6 from my desk and we set it up for him (I've been trying to get him on #TeamPixel forever, we'll see if he wears the watch or uses the Buds).
One of the things about him picking up that phone, and I did like it (it did have a rocky start), but one of the things they mentioned in the launch was the longevity. 5 years of updates.
Now, there's a caveat. 5 years of 'updates', but only 3 years of 'OS upgrades'. So, coming out like October of 2021, means it got the October 2024 upgrade to Android 15. But that would be it. From here on out, my son will only see security updates on his phone (not that he'd ever notice).
Not everything lasts forever, and there are some that never like to hear that, and there's been discussion on many channels about "oh it'll get Android 16". But, Android 16 wouldn't be out until mid 2025? Well past October 2024, right?
The discussion centres on the Pixel 6a, which came out about 6 months after the 6/6Pro, and it was promised 3 years of 'upgrades', which puts it into that window of Android 16 - so the logic goes "if you can do it for the 'scaled down' version of the 6, you can do it just as easily for the 6".
See, some have always believed that the 'a' variant of a Pixel, is the economical version of said line. Pixel 7a is the Pixel 7 just stripping away some of the expensive bits. Me, I feel that Google delays that cheaper variant half a year, just to help give you a glimpse of the next iteration. They'll have already been well in to the Pixel (n+1) version, so the Pixel (n)a variant I'd say would be heavily 'flavoured' by (n+1) rather than just pare down the (n).
Anyways, we'll have to wait and see until midway through 2025 and Android 16 to find out if Google will make that adjustment or not.
