Your Chromebook is going to get even better with Gemini

You guessed it, AI is going to be squeezed into our favourite non-phone mobile devices: our Chromebooks (and I'm hoping my Chromebase).

They're goin to be adding with an 'October update' a bunch of features that will be available on 'all Chromebooks' and some that are going to be Chromebook Plus specific:

AI features available on Chromebook Plus:

  • Speed up understanding with Help me read. Help me read helps you summarize PDFs, articles, or websites, all with a right click. You can even ask follow-up questions to dive deeper. Starting next year you can even highlight specific sentences or paragraphs you need extra help clarifying.
  • Make content more accessible with Live Translate*. Use Live Translate to enable Google AI-translated captions on whatever is on your screen, whether it’s a Zoom meeting or a YouTube livestream. Live Translate can instantly translate content into over 100 languages.
  • Easily capture audio, thoughts and notes with Recorder app. Use the Google AI-powered Recorder app to create transcriptions that can detect and label speakers and provide a summary of recorded content.
  • Be seen and heard authentically with new video call features. New studio-style mic and built-in appearance enhancements make your video calls even better. The studio-style mic feature helps you sound crystal clear with AI-based high-quality mic simulation that also reduces noise and room reverberation. The built-in appearance effects automatically adjust lighting, brightness, and more to help you look your best. Best of all, these features can work across any video calling app
  • Get instant help when you need it with Quick Insert**. Need help editing what you’re writing, adding a URL link or just finding the perfect emoji or GIF? With a tap of the Quick Insert keyboard button, a menu instantly gives you access to everything you might need, including quick access to Help Me Write, Emojis and GIFs, a list of your recently opened websites, Google Drive integrated search, and tactical tools to do simple calculations on the fly. 

New features now available on all Chromebooks:

  • Chat with Gemini. Now available on all Chromebooks. No need to open your browser to chat with Gemini and instead get help planning trips, generating unique images and learning more about what sparks your curiosity, all from your home screen. 
  • Welcome Recap helps you pick up where you left off. Whenever you log into your Chromebook, Welcome Recap gives a visual overview of where you last were across any device and helpful suggestions to get into the groove. You might get a reminder to join your next video call or a clickable suggestion to finish an article started on your Android or iOS phone.
  • Focus helps you stay distraction free. Whether you have dedicated focus time or have a specific Google Task you want to finish, choose a time and soundscape or YouTube Music playlist***, then Focus can automatically turn on “Do not Disturb” for a distraction-free experience.
  • Pin important files to your home screen for easier file-finding. Access files in a click, by pinning them to your Chromebook’s shelf. To save even more time, Launcher even suggests the Google Docs or Slides you may be looking for.
  • Google One AI Premium. Try Google’s most capable AI tools through the Google One AI Premium plan at no cost for three months with the purchase of a new Chromebook****. The plan includes access to Gemini Advanced, 2TB of storage and Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Gmail and more. You can also get access to 12 months of the Google One AI Premium plan with a new Chromebook Plus purchase.

**The Quick Insert key comes exclusively on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus, but existing Chromebook users can use the feature with a keyboard shortcut. Next year the key will be available across more Chromebook and Chromebook Plus laptops, along with the ability to create AI-generated images, right from the Quick Insert menu
