Google's new Pixel 9 unboxed and initial impressions

Okay, it's here, the new Google Pixel 9, with its Tensor G4 chip, newly designed camera 'bump', and a lot of Gemini crammed in.

Google sent me the Google Pixel 9 in its Peony colour, which you can order now for $1099CDN (plus you'll get $150 in store credit), so let's unbox it and give you my first thoughts.

So, I like it.  It is very 'slab like'.  Solid hand feel, but still a little slippery for my taste.  I will have to invest in a case.  Possibly a screen protector (I have babied it for a week, but I do notice a tiny 'nick' in one little corner).

Not much stuck out from the Pixel 8 for me (outside of the 'bump'... get it?  stuck out?).

It just felt like a Pixel 8 in a different box.  The experience is all the same as before for the most part.

I did notice that it was brighter, but it was also set to like 80% (and I'm usually around 50-60% kinda guy).

The SIM tray is now on the bottom, and curiously enough the tray was just slightly at the edge that the curve catches it.

It's funny that that's what I noticed.  So you definitely couldn't just put in a tray from another device and get away with it.  Not that I think anybody ever did, just ... it's what I noticed.

Using the phone, and again because there was no Android 15 release with the phone, it felt like the 8 but just now had 2 new apps:  Screenshots and Pixel Studio.

The camera I'll have to put through its paces to see how it stacks up, but it also comes with a new software feature:  Add Me.

Then their own weather app has a quick AI recap for you.

I'll give you a run down of those apps/features in another review shortly.

In the meantime, I'm liking it... it feels physically different.  It is slightly better in performance (12GB of RAM over the previous 8GB), and the battery is slightly better too.

I don't like not having it in a case, so I'll rectify that soon, but I'll keep going and give you a full review in the next couple of days or so.
