Kingdom Rush 6 - Genesis is out (video)

Currently, I'm sitting at an airport lounge waiting for my flight.  I've got my laptop out, I've done a bunch of emails and need something to pass the time.  I like some kinda mobile game that is fast, not too fast, is difficult,, but not unbeatable; something that requires some amount of strategy to it.

I've always liked those tower defence kinda games, but I hadn't played one in a while, and with the recent launch of Kingdom Rush 6:  Genesis, I was given the opportunity to test it out and, I am enjoying it.

I had played some of the earlier Kingdom Rush games when they all came out and somehow it had slipped off my radar (I recall getting a bunch of them through the Humble Bundles in the past).

6 is now out and runs at just under $10 and is definitely worth its price.  This is the kind of game that an ad supported theme would just ruin it, and for the $10 you're going to get hours and hours of use, so rationalizing just pennies for time is a good use.

The premise is simple in these games.  Ultimately, bad guys come from one side of the screen trying to make it to the other.  Your job is to stop them.

With Kingdom Rush the paths are set for a given level, what you can do is set up attackers along that path to ensure they are eliminated before going any further.

Kingdom Rush goes a bit further by providing an element of RPG to the game where you can not only just upgrade the towers in each level, you can purchase upgrades outside of it that are applied universally.

upgrading features in the game so that you can do more damage from towers or abilities

You also are provided 'heroes' to join you in this bad guy blocking.  These heroes (as you go along you get more than just the one) gain XP during their battles to help upgrade them universally as well.

each hero can upgrade their stats/abilities as they progress in XP

Amongst other upgrades to spells you can use as the game progresses.

upgrading the 'recruits' ability/spell so that it gets stronger

If you're like me, you only do the first few levels and then repeat a few hundred times to get as many upgrades as you can before going further.  Not sure if it's the best (some upgrades you only get by being able to '3 star' a level anyways); but it's how I like to play.

To add a replayability to levels you beat repeatedly, there are 'different' modes you can add a level of difficulty to the levels to get different rewards.

In previous editions you'd tend to find some 'secrets' here or there, or Easter Eggs... as such, I've not yet found one, but it's still early days for me.

Overall, it's a great game, decent price (how many of us don't have a large 'credit' from doing all those 'rewards'), and it's got a great level of game play for you to continue to do it for hours again and again.  Plus, I like the little cutsie-ness of it, almost comic book style, really helps to want to play it again.
