Pixel 10a is launched and is pretty familiar

Okay, so this one has me scratching my head.  Usually Google releases Pixel # and then in a few months they release a Pixel #a.  Now it earns the same # because it has a lot of the specs of the # series to connect it to, just with a few sacrifices, maybe not as good a camera, or a little less RAM.

That's what we'd expect.

Let's take a look at the Pixel 10a, which starts at $679CDN

  • Display
    • 6.3"
    • 2424x1080
    • 60-120Hz
    • 3000nits peak
    • 2million:1 contrast ratio
    • Gorilla Glass 7i
  • Processor
    • Tensor G4
    • 8GB RAM
    • Titan M2
  • 128GB storage
  • Rear Camera
    • 48M (f/1.7, 25mm, 1/2.0", 0.8um)
    • 13MP (f/2.2, 120deg, 1/3.1, 1.12um
  • Selfie
    • 13MP (f/2.2, 20mm, , 1/3.1", 1.12um)
  • Battery
    • 5100mAh
    • 45W max charging speed
    • Qi (10W)
  • IP68

Okay, a lot of those specs look familiar... but for me what stands out is that Tensor G4.  That's LAST YEAR'S processor.  I get reducing some features (maybe not Qi2, definitely not the 12GB RAM), but to get last year's processor.  Hrmm...

If you do the fun bit of going to the Google Store and doing the comparison, of the 9a to the 10a with the 10 thrown in (you can even do it with GSMArena) you see some interesting similarities:

Okay, so you can see there's some update of this year's to match the 10 (better glass, higher brightness, higher contrast).

The battery looks similar, but a little faster charging this year

And this is the part that bugs me -- feels like it should just be called a Pixel 9a+ or something.

Now, that aside - you'll still get a Pixel.  It'll still have Gemini, a great camera and other features (Circle to Search, Pixel Studio, Add Me, Astro, Best Take, etc...).

Just feels almost like that time they came out with the iPhone 5 and then the 5c was last year's model just repackaged.
