Statik's SmartCharge is an 'always carry' in my go bag

If you've followed my site for any time, you'll know I'm a battery guy... I like to keep my device always topped up.  Even if I go out of the house for a small 'jaunt' I'll make sure to bring something to just ensure if I needed it ... I had it.

But regular battery chargers means you'll have to also bring a cord.  And if you want to charge up the battery, you'll probably need to plug it in so it's full... so I am appreciative of devices that simplifies that process.

This one from Statik, definitely is a true Swiss Army knife for charging.

Okay, as stats go, on paper, for $99USD, it's got a lot.

  • 10,000mAh
  • Digital readout of battery %
  • Qi with MagSafe (15W)
  • AC plug
  • Physical USB-C cord (15W)
  • Physical lightning (12W)
  • USB-A port (22W)
  • USB-C port (20W)

Okay, we get it, there are a lot of options.  And, on top of it, you also get the foreign plug adapters.  I'm not much of a world traveller (I know, I've never even been off continent), so I don't need them.

At first I thought this was going to be a great charger for me to take on trips; but it's a bit big by some of my charging standards (you've got to fit everything in for sure), so I've changed my stance on it.  I'm sure it would be good for trips, but I don't need the lightning port, so I think this might be better suited as a work conference, or meeting type spare charger.  You can put your phone on the Qi, a friend's phone with the USB-C cord and then an iPhone friend's phone with the lightning... and then 2 others depending on what cords people have with them.

That's a lot of friendly charge sharing that's available.  And 10,000mAh, if shared evenly over 5 people.. that's 2,000mAh.  Almost half for my phone, but a good amount for some others too I'll bet.

And, when it's depleted, you can just plug it in.  No extra cords.  Plug directly in the wall.

I was kinda hoping that maybe the plug would be perpendicular to the Qi pad, so you could plug it in and set it on top, but no.  The way it's aligned and most plugs are, you'll be counting on the magnet to hold your phone on the cube while it's plugged and you want to charge.  Awkward, but I will largely bet that is such a rare situation.

Same with this little slide out 'stand'.  It won't work if it's plugged in, and putting your phone into it, the cords are not really positioned to be able to reach.

Bit of a missed opportunity if you ask me.

All in all, it's a bit big for me to want to carry always, I like to go about my jaunts as light as possible, but if I'm going out for work, or a meeting, where I'm taking a bag or something, it makes total sense.

And the price does not hurt at all.
