Having had my own run in with a porch pirate (again, I'll reiterate, DO NOT do that, that was dumb of me to chase him), I'm now constantly anxious whenever I have a delivery. The past few years delivery companies are seemingly happy to just leave the parcel wherever, snap a photo and leave.
They used to be cautious, putting it in the door, or going around to the back porch even. I've had a company just leave a big screen TV on my steps thinking it was 'fine'.
Well, Amazon is going a step further - and you can see it in action today in Toronto at their Smart Home Event - with Key In-Garage Delivery (for Prime members).
This is a partnership with compatible MyQ garage doors, you can link your smart garage with the Amazon app. Then, when you have a delivery, for an extra $1.99 they will be able to open your garage and place your package inside.
Cool.
There are a lot of moving parts to consider tho' here, and I think Amazon is doing its best to try to allay those fears; where they won't go far into the garage, the ability to open is a one-time shot.
I'm assuming there's going to be a massive log of who opened what garage through the service, so any nefarious ne'er-do-wells getting access to it will be quickly identified.
I'm also guessing that if you've got a smart garage, you've probably got more security cameras around to really nail down if anything happens.
How do you feel about this? I feel like I would definitely love the idea that something delivered is now safely INSIDE... but would I let a stranger do it? It's definitely a quandry of the new smart home era.
