A few months now with the Pixel 7 Pro

I was lucky enough to be able to get my hands on the 7 Pro after some time with the 7, for those of you interested, is the upgrade worth it?

In my unboxing I laid out that for $1200 (just $400 more than the 7) you get:

  • 6.7" (up from 6.3")
  • 3120x1440 @ 120Hz (up from 2400x1080 @ 90Hz)
  • 12GB RAM (up from 8)
  • 5000mAh (up from 4355mAh)
  • Add in the 48MP telephoto (f/3.5, 20.6°, 0.7µm, 5x zoom)

For me the big features that are going to be worth it is the RAM, the extra lens (just in case) and I do like knowing it's the QuadHD display.

But, here's a quick run down:

The part I didn't quite realize was the curved/rounded glass edge.  I just love that look and really makes the device feel 'premium'.

The battery, is bigger, but I didn't notice it being any better than the 7 (which makes sense, it's a bigger screen, it's a higher resolution with a greater refresh rate - so it does have more drain).

I'm a little put out by the camera.  In normal modes the AI of the device really shows and takes amazing shots without thinking.  For me it's those moments I really want a good shot, I find I fiddle more.  Trying to pick something to focus on, especially close up.  It's supposed to have a macro mode, but it didn't really 'wow' me at being great.  Moreso, it just showed how bad a job it struggled with near focusing.

Overall, $400 isn't that much more to spend and I think it definitely is matched by the step ups you get.
