Google releases the deets on the Pixel 4a series

Just in their cyclical timing - Google follows up their highly successful flagship with a slightly less spec'd out 'a' version.  Wait, was there a Pixel 2a?  No... it was just the 3 that had the a, eh?  Well, it still feels right that they launch this (just as they're about to launch their 5 series too).

The Pixel 4a comes in at just $479CDN and there doesn't seem to be any options for storage or sizing (no XL?  😞).

Let's see the specs:

  • 5.81" @ FHD+ / HDR
  • Snapdragon 730
  • 6GB RAM
  • 128GB storage
  • Rear: 12.2MP (f/1.7, 77°, 1.4µm)
  • Front: 8MP (f/2.0, 84°, 1.22µm)
  • Headphone jack
  • Fingerprint sense
  • 3140mAh

Now, because this new model has a punchout for the camera, not including the Sola sensors, it is slightly 'bigger' as a screen.  Removing some of the guts (like the 2nd lens on the back) has also allowed them to bump up the battery a little (from the 4), include a headphone jack and include (THANK GOD) a fingerprint sensor.

I can't tell you how much I'd missed the fingerprint sensor.

You get the same amazing rear camera (without the telephoto, but I never really used it myself).

You just get it cheaper and maybe not as snappy a punch ... but I'll let you know when it reaches my hand for testing shortly.

When they also launched the 4, they put a bit emphasis on the sustainability of the products used in creating their cases.  The 4a is no different - it's case (which runs for $50CDN).

Picking a phone case is a difficult decision. What colour should you choose? Do you want something flashy or simple? Maybe you're looking for something that has the environment in mind; if that's the case, you're in luck, because our signature knit fabric case, made with recycled content, has arrived for the Pixel 4a. The case comes in three colours (Basically Black, Static Gray and Blue Confetti), seamlessly combining beauty, lightweight protection and recycled materials.

Knitted for the planet

Last year, we outlined our sustainability commitments across manufacturing, the supply chain and product design. We also introduced the new Google Nest Mini speaker, the first Google product with fabric made with recycled water bottles. The Pixel 4a cases also feature this material; in fact, two recycled plastic bottles can provide enough knitted outer fabric for five cases. In total, the case is made from over 70 percent recycled material, meaning we’re turning waste into something beautiful.

Made to last

The new Pixel 4a fabric case reduces worries of wear and tear by using a jacquard pattern to more effectively mask signs of use. When hand washing won’t do the trick, the Pixel 4a fabric case is also machine washable with clothes or on its own to help remove dirt, dyes and other grime that could build up in between the fibers of the case. See for more tips.

Find your style

Fresh patterns and textures along with beautiful pop colours on the lock button and G symbol add vibrance and functionality to your phone case. The unique fabric material and new patterns come in three colours that complement the Pixel 4a and your own style, so you don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics for protection.

Added protection, just in case

Our new edge-to-edge inner microfiber wraps around your Pixel and the raised-edge design helps protect your screen and camera against scratches. You can rest easy knowing that your Pixel is in safe hands, even if your hands may be a little unsteady.
