Wiser energy ties all your electricity into data for your purview

Okay, this is the age of information.  It's not enough to just make things smart these days.  If you're not right into the different Nest or Philips Hue type of equipment, and there a lot of other that we've even reviewed on here.

It's all a bit of a mess.  But there's this one option, that I'll understand I don't quite get, because it's so very thorough, it ties it all together, with whatever you already have.  It just takes some electrician's work to make it all connect.  And you get to view it in the Sense app.

Now, I didn't get one to review, as they've said it requires an electrician to come in and install the items.  From their website they have a bunch of types of equipment and you can buy a monitoring kit starting at $449.  So this isn't a simple system, nor inexpensive.

I'm not going to get into the technical details of what it can do and what's needed, I'll let you see the demo environment that I got.

I didn't get to review the proper metering equipment, as I don't have easy access to an electrician to make sure it would be installed properly, so I'll leave the reviews of the hardware piece up to other websites and reviewers.

You'll see below their press release with more details.

It was pretty neat.  And kinda fun how I'd get notices on my watch from the app that the garage door opened, or the dishwasher stopped.

Pretty neat.

With the app you'll see that you get a lot of data about how much energy is being used, and when as well as estimating how much your energy costs will be, including if you had energy production from solar panels etc...

If you're into automating your home, or just with the rising costs of electricity lately you want to monitor how your usage is equating into those bills so you can make informed decisions about what to control, this might be worth a lot in the end.

As an aside note, I was having discussions with some friends about their aging family members and how they are at that point where it's not time to put them in a group home or care facility, but independance is getting harder to ensure. They check on them all the time, did they remember to turn off the oven, when was the last time they ran the washing machine, etc...

It makes a somewhat inobtrusive monitoring system.

Schneider Electric’s Wiser Energy an effective way to monitor seasonal electricity use
  • Set energy goals and reduce electricity consumption this winter with real time active monitoring
  • Monitor appliances with instant alerts and custom notifications
MISSISSAUGA, October 28, 2019 – Seasonal changes mean colder temperatures, longer nights and less time spent outdoors. As the weather turns, Canadians spend more time inside, using electricity to cook, cozy up on the couch for movie nights and entertain friends and family.

To help manage electricity use, Schneider Electric has created Wiser Energy, an integrated monitoring system for residential homes. The internet-connected device tracks and monitors energy activity and use to provide real-time, easy-to-understand data so homeowners can make their homes greener and more efficient—all through a convenient mobile-app.

“Canadians should be able to make smart decisions about their energy use, particularly as seasons change and usage increases,” says Adrian Thomas, Vice President of Home and Distribution, Schneider Electric Canada. “The growing popularity of smart home technology shows Canadians want to have more control over their homes, and Wiser Energy allows them to make their homes safe and efficient throughout the winter season.”

As the seasons change, Wiser Energy can help Canadians:
  • Identify extra electricity consumption from having the oven and stove on more often while cooking and entertaining friends and family.
  • Understand how much electricity is being used from having an electric fireplace or space heater to warm up a room.
  • Leave for that fancy holiday party with peace of mind they remembered to turn off the hair straightener or clothing iron.
Wiser Energy easily connects to a residential electrical panel and Wi-Fi network. Over time, the system learns about a home to identify appliances and energy use patterns. Wiser Energy can help homeowners determine how they can change their habits to use energy smarter.

Product benefits include:
  • Peace of mind: Canadians can keep tabs on home activity from anywhere with an easy to use mobile app, so they can know when the garage door is opened, when the clothes are dry, or whether the sump pump is running.
  • Instant Alert Notification: Homeowners can be notified with instant, customizable alerts for appliances, so there’s no worrying whether the oven was left on or the curling iron was left plugged in.
  • Save Money: Reduce electricity bills with live energy tracking and detailed views by appliance, leading to lower energy consumption.
Wiser Energy is powered by the Sense app, whose intelligent home energy technology interprets the power usage and activity of devices in the home. Wiser Energy is available online through Home Depot.
