OnePlus One ... out with the old, in with the new

So it's all the news today.  Just a day or so left until the OnePlus One is ready to go live and they have a very interesting way to help drum up interest.

They kinda need it after most folks really eschewed the 'velvet rope' trick, where you'd have to ask to be a select group to be able to purchase, and then you could invite up to 2 others.

First off they announced the price.  $299 ($349 if you wanted the 64GB version vs just the 16).

Second, they'll sell it to you for just $1 if you offer to smash your current phone.  Hrmm...
It's been unveiled:

Let's take a look at the specs here:

  • 5.5" @ 1080p (with Gorilla Glass 3)
  • 2.5GHz x4 Snapdragon 801 w/ 3GB RAM
  • 16GB or 64GB storage + microSD
  • 13MP (w/ 6 element lens) / 5MP
  • Cyanogen 11S (4.4)
Not bad specs at all.  And $350 for a 64GB size.  Definitely intrigued.

Now about this smashing business... according to the press release from OnePlus if you go to their site you can register that you'll smash your current phone.  On April 25th they'll pick from the list that signed up 100 candidates.  Those will get the opportunity to smash their phone on video and purchase the One for $1.

There's a lot of ... 'ifs' there.  For lots of folks it's a matter of 'wasting' a perfectly good phone.  Kind of a shame.  For me, it's a matter of the semantics.  The word is 'current phone'.  I would really not want to ruin a perfectly good Nexus 4.  However my glitchy S3, or any of my previous cadre of phones I have kicking around.  I wouldn't mind sacrificing for a good deal.

How about you?  What camp are you in?
