Get around to meeting the "Galaxy Round"

Seriously?  Wow, we haven't had much info on this in a while.  There was talk of curved screens and the ilk for quite some time.  Recently LG and Samsung were rumoured to be developing something, but that wasn't that long ago (just like yesterday) and at least I had assumed that it was still some time off.

Well, Samsung has outed the device officially outed the device and given it quite the (in my mind) horrific name of 'round'.    Let's take a look.

Samsung Galaxy Round

  • 5.7" curved OLED @ 1920x1080
    • 400mm radius
  • 2.3GHz x4 w/ 3GB RAM
  • 13MP
  • Android 4.3
  • 2800mAh
  • ~$1000US

The Korean cellphone magnate shows off the new feature "Roll Effect" on their SamsungTomorrow youtube page:

An interesting concept.  Personally when I ever heard 'flexible screen' or curved, I assumed that it would still be a flat device that would have some 'give' to it.  Not sure how having it already curved will provide it anything more than the opportunity to use the 'roll effect'.

The screen itself is supposedly flexible, so it should allow for some wear and tear and not permanently damage the screen, however the case around it probably can't say the same.

At $1000 a hit, I can't see it flying off the shelves.  We'll have to see if it makes it's way over to the shelves of this shore as they haven't even suggested a date yet for Korea.
