Something I learned during our discussion last night was that there is a new version of Gmail making the rounds. You can pick up a copy at +APK Mirror here: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/gmail/gmail-6-0-115234454-release-release/
This latest version is allowing us to access a formatting 'toolbar' so we can finally add in rich text features to our emails from our devices.
Just long press on a word to bring up the command bar, or tap the cursor indicator and then you'll see the basic RTF tools (just bold, italic, underline, colour and highlighting so far... no bullets or alignment ... yet).
