Modular Phones the wave of the future?

There's something to the old desktop that a lot of us 'geeks' sure enjoy.  And probably why they still haven't gone the way of the dodo.  To some extent the same can be said of laptops.

It's customizability.  I don't just mean slapping a 'sticker' here or there, or even adjusting what our desktop looks like, etc... I'm meaning going into the device and swapping its guts.

I've been out of the 'hardware game' for a while, but it was something that really had me looking at each spec and feature when I used to buy computers.  Nowadays I'm looking at the processor and video card.  Even still, knowing that I can swap something out down the road.

Our phones are not like that.  Not without a great deal of technical expertise, or at least a steady hand and good memory (just how many screws did I take out?).  Well, the dream of a phone that you could more easily replace the parts has been on many of our minds for some time, and a new project "Phonebloks" looks to do that, but it's a heck of a stretch goal.
