I am not silent on how much I love magnetic charging options. It's become a must, it's just super convenient as I love wireless charging already, and then a magnet to keep things in place, just makes sense.
The new OnePlus 13 case has the magnets built in, and just handy; so to take the most advantage of charging it, OnePlus has a new AIRVOOC (the wireless equivalent of their SuperVOOC style charging) with magnets.
Last year's AIRVOOC charger was a stand, so they've upped the game by making it magnetic, but - in similar way to the charging pod for the OnePlus Watch 2, the charger is meant to be plugged into, so it's easier to take around with you.
This thing is literally, a puck.
So, the downside to this $109CDN charger... kinda expensive btw... is that is missing all the stuff you need to actually charge. A wall plug, and a cord!
Now, you could use any block and USB-C cord, but if you want to have the proper speeds that it advertises you'll need to buy their SuperVOOC block ($70CDN) and then a compatible USB-A to C cord ($30CDN).
Or, you have those already in the box with your OnePlus 13. Use the right stuff and it can get up to 50W of wireless charging speeds (compared to the Pixel Stand 2 up to 23W).
I like the size, it's all self contained, and it's a sturdy magnet to connect to the phone.
You could just leave it as is, and wander around and just plug in as needed, doesn't add all that much space when on your desk. Except the little 'red nose' in the centre is a bit of an 'orb', so the phone continuously 'rolls' around on it, so it never lays flat.
Now, without the right cables/box it claims it can go up to 50W of charging speed. At those speeds you'll need the venting to help keep the temp down, and it's got a little fan built in.
Now, I used the app AmpereFlow to measure the charging speed, and it seems the lower the battery power was initially when you charge it, the faster it would be. When it was 70% or higher, I never really saw it go higher than 15W.
When I drained it down to 30% it would creep up to almost 30W, but I never got the full 50W. Now, is that a fault of the app measuring it? Is it lower as I was watching it? (I tried to screen record the results but with that extra 'work' it never would go above 12 while recording too)
It was neat to watch the numbers and how it would take those moments to start recognizing it's AIRVOOC standard and then 'build up speed' in charging.
It's just a handy device to have with you, takes up not much room in your tech bag. Just the downside is that you'll need to have 'their tech' to get the most out of it. So if you take the charging block and cord your phone came with (which I hate doing, I just rather plug something in and leave it); or buy a 2nd set -- it could be an expensive charging set -- but then there isn't anything else out there giving that fast a wireless charge! So you won't need it for long!
It also works on any other wireless item, magnetic or not (just be more conscientious where you connect it) and just you won't get near those full speeds
