Raptors or Leafs fan - there's a new app experience for you

Not being from the 'big smoke' (i.e. Toronto... what else can we call it... cabbage town... I think that's a part of the T-dot...), I love to visit it whenever I get a chance.  I work with several organizations that are based in Toronto, so I can go visit my sister in law a few times a year.

One of the things you HAVE TO do while you're there is to catch a live game.  Blue Jays, Raptors, Leafs ... something.  I'm not even a sports guy, but it's an amazing experience live.

Well, fans of the Raptors and Leafs will have a new app to help enhance their experience.

The app will allow fans to get real time updates, directions to the games (via Waze) or even buy team swag (which is kinda nice as trying to get into the gift shop on the way out of the game is usually nightmarishly busy) and even have some AR experiences.

Maple Leafs and Raptors use latest technology to enhance fan experience ahead of 2017-2018 playoffs

MLSE partners with YinzCam, Waze and Orbital to connect fans with their teams, and deliver ultimate experience, through Maple Leafs and Raptors apps

Today, as both the Maple Leafs and Raptors prepare for the 2017-18 playoffs, MLSE announced that its tech partners, YinzCam, Waze and Orbital, will enhance the experience for fans of both teams inside the arena and beyond. Through the Toronto Raptors app and Toronto Maple Leafs app, fans will have access to exclusive perks and features in the palm of their hands, and provide a completely connected and digital experience whether they are watching the game at home or in the stands.

“Creating memorable moments for fans, especially with the start of exciting playoff runs for both teams, was the inspiration behind the new features on both apps,” said Neem Ba Ha, Director, Product Development at MLSE. “With YinzCam and Waze, we developed a platform for both Raptors and Maple Leafs fans that will bring them closer to their teams whether they are in the arena or watching the game at home. This is how fans want to connect with their teams now and we are proud to work with some of the world’s best providers to deliver a first-class experience for our fans.”

MLSE’s collaboration with YinzCam created a one-stop hub for everything Raptors and Leafs – including real-time game updates, in-app purchases on team merchandise, exclusive mobile contests and giveaways and more. Waze is integrated in the apps and offers fans customized routes to Air Canada Centre when they are on the way to a game, and notifies them if there are any road closures related to MLSE events.

“It’s refreshing to see human-centred design thinking being used in sports. We work with hundreds of teams and technology projects, and MLSE is the only team that uses this type of process. This is how products should be developed,” said Priya Narasimhan, CEO and Founder of YinzCam.

“Traffic is a universal problem, especially on game day where there is an increase in vehicles on the road,” said Mike Wilson, Country Manager, Canada, Waze. “As a member of our Global Event Partners (GEP) program, MLSE is empowered with free traffic tools to manage congestion around their venues in a way that was not previously possible. Additionally, MLSE has the ability to update Waze with event parking, including temporary parking locations. All of this real-time information and updates have made a huge impact not only on fans traveling to the events but on all citizens traveling city-wide.”

“Often when we’re proposing emerging digital engagement, there is a certain level of uncertainty about diving in and trying something new,” said Nick Tomkin, President and Founder of Orbital. “Luckily, MLSE was already excited to get started. The objective was to create real and meaningful experiences for their fans, and using the Orbital Augmented Reality Platform, MLSE can deploy new augmented experiences to their apps instantly without requiring any additional development or downloads.”

In anticipation for the NHL and NBA 2017-2018 playoffs, the new features offered on the Raptors and Leafs apps are just the beginning of what is to come. Click on the links to download each app for the ultimate digital fan experience: Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs.
