BARCELONA, Mobile World Congress – February 27, 2017 – Sony Mobile Communications (“Sony Mobile”) today announced four new additions to the Xperia X portfolio. Leading the way for this exciting new line is the ground-breaking Xperia XZ Premium, Sony’s new innovative flagship smartphone that combines the world’s first super slow motion camera system in a smartphone with Sony’s triple image sensing (predictive hybrid autofocus, laser autofocus, RGB-IR) technology to capture amazing details beyond the human eye and enables advanced features and excellence in picture quality. Also for the first time in a smartphone, Xperia XZ Premium features a 4K HDR display for astonishing brightness, colour, clarity and contrast of users’ images, videos, games and other entertainment.

Sony Mobile’s new Xperia XZs also features super slow-motion capability and other state-of-the-art camera technologies in a 5.2-inch screen form factor. Rounding out the new line are the mid-tier Xperia XA1 Ultra (6”) and Xperia XA1 (5”), both of which offer eye-catching design and remarkable camera technology for capturing and sharing great shots.

“Sony Mobile is passionate about driving the future of communications and creating technology that will make even the most ordinary moments, actions, and communications extraordinary,” said Kunihiko Shiomi, President of Sony Mobile Communications North America. “With our new smartphone lineup, Sony Mobile is bringing best-in-class technology in camera, design, and entertainment meant to amplify everyday life. Whether it’s capturing details beyond the human eye or simply having the best display for watching videos on the go, we want users to get excited about the life they lead without putting in more effort than they have to.”

Sony Mobile also announced the availability for Xperia Touch, formerly called Xperia Projector, a compact short-throw projector that turns any flat surface into an interactive and collaborative touchscreen. The company has also introduced the successor to Xperia Ear™ tentatively called Xperia™ Ear "Open-style CONCEPT", a truly next generation smart audio technology concept which is next in line within the Xperia Smart Products family. Xperia Touch and Xperia Ear "Open-style CONCEPT" represent a clear demonstration of Sony Mobile’s commitment to developing new types of “smart products” that will transform how users communicate, share information and enjoy entertainment.

Innovation Flagship Xperia XZ Premium Captures Details Beyond the Human Eye
Encapsulating decades of Sony innovation, Xperia XZ Premium incorporates imaging know-how embedded in Sony ‘α’ and Cyber-shot™ cameras to create the new Motion Eye™ camera system, for capturing life in ways no other smartphone can.

With Motion Eye, Xperia XZ Premium provides 5X faster image scanning and data transfer. This means users can create sensational videos from everyday moments by recording in 960 frames per second, which provides super slow motion video playback that is 4X slower than other smartphones.

Xperia XZ Premium also features Predictive Capture that allows users to stay one step ahead and automatically starts buffering images when it detects motion even before the camera button is pushed. As a result, users can find that moment they may have missed from a selection of four photos taken two seconds before even taking a shot.

And, with its 4K HDR 5.5-inch display, Xperia XZ Premium delivers a truly unique Sony experience, using Sony’s BRAVIA®TV technology to give users an immersive viewing experience on their smartphones. The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset provides increased processing power and graphics performance to this incredible device. Xperia XZ Premium is also loaded with Smart STAMINA battery management, a machine learning system which accurately estimates how much battery usage is left based on improved analysis on users’ behaviours and patterns. The feature avoids excess charging to support the lifestyle of the user and the lifecycle of the device.

Xperia XZ Premium is offered in chrome Deep Sea Black and Luminous Chrome. The chrome details pair with the sturdy Gorilla® Glass 5 finishes along the front and back to emphasize the smartphone’s seamless loop design form. The top and bottom are encased in aluminium and use a double-anodizing process to emphasize the metallic expression.

A Variety of Options to Meet the Needs of Every User
In addition to Xperia XZ Premium, Sony Mobile offers three other new smartphone models to meet the needs of every user. A successor of the highly acclaimed Xperia XZ, the Xperia XZs takes the same 5.2” form factor, includes the innovative Motion Eye camera system, 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory and comes in the new colours Ice Blue, Warm Silver and Black.

Building on the success of the Xperia XA models launched last year, the Xperia XA1 and the 6-inch large screen Xperia XA1 Ultra feature a beautiful borderless design with edge-to-edge screens. Both will surpass camera expectations with high-end camera specifications including 23MP sensors and low-light capabilities, while the Xperia XA1 Ultra has been designed specifically for selfie and video live feed lovers with its superior 16MP front-facing camera with Optical Image Stabilization and LED flash. Xperia XA1 Ultra’s big screen makes it an ideal on-the-go entertainment hub, with movies displayed in full 1080p HD resolution, a smart amplifier to maximize sound, and 4GB of RAM to support games.

Both Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra will roll out with Android Nougat at launch in a choice of contemporary finishes: White, Black, Pink and Gold.

Acclaimed concept to commercial product: Xperia Touch, the interactive and collaborative Android projector launches Summer 2017
Previously known as Xperia Projector, Xperia Touch will be the second of Sony Mobile’s smart product concepts coming to market.

Xperia Touch is an interactive projector that turns any flat surface into a 23” HD touchscreen, with either horizontal or vertical ultrashort-throw laser projection that also can be used for viewing only up to 80” on the wall. The interface is fast, fluid and responsive to physical touch – it’s built using Sony’s SXRD projection display technology, and touch is made possible through a combination of infrared light and real-time detection via its built-in camera, at a rate of 60 frames-per-second.

Xperia Touch enables family and friends to gather around a table, kitchen island or flat wall to enjoy games, watch online video streaming services and communicate using messaging apps and social networks.

The elegant home screen skin is engineered specifically for touch – designed to be both minimalistic and accessible in brightly lit or dark conditions. It provides real-time weather information, a memo board for doodles or video notes, calendar access and a Skype™ portal for video chat with colleagues or loved ones.

Not only is Xperia Touch compatible with PlayStation® 4 Remote Play, it will run any app or game downloaded from the Google Play Store, setting a new precedent for the way hundreds of thousands of application experiences can now be enjoyed. And, the unique projection, touch capability and sensor architecture will provide developers with an entirely new platform on which to build and create.

Hands-free. Eyes-free. Ears-free: Xperia Ear “Open-style CONCEPT” is a next-generation Xperia Smart Product concept
Xperia Ear “Open-style CONCEPT” is based on 'open-ear' audio technology developed within Sony's Future Lab Program, an incubator that enables consumers to test and shape prototypes from Sony’s R&D division.

It utilizes Sony's acoustics research and leadership to deliver wireless 'open-ear' stereo headphones, so you can listen to music and receive notifications while simultaneously hearing sounds from the world around you. Whether you’re listening to music during a workout or commute, it’s an unparalleled ambient experience.

Xperia Ear “Open-style CONCEPT” is built to completely reimagine everyday listening and communication – its two highly powerful spatial acoustic conductors and driver units work together to transmit sounds directly to the ear canal.

Similar to Xperia Ear, Xperia Ear “Open-style CONCEPT” will be powered by Sony Agent Technology – a personal assistant that uses conversational voice interaction and head gestures to help users get things done, access information and communicate.

Sony Mobile will continue to develop and improve on features to further increase the in-ear assistant capability. An example of this is ‘Anytime Talk,’ a new voice-chat service that will allow users to instantaneously start a group conversation in real-time with a simple single button press or head movement without searching through contacts or needing to dial. The beta version will roll out for the first-generation Xperia Ear over the coming months.

Sony Mobile is also exploring a new collaboration with LINE Corporation - the group behind popular messaging app, LINE - to develop and co-create a new integrated voice experience.
